What Reiki Is
Hands-on healing has existed since the ancient times of Jesus and Buddha. For thousands of years, humans have instinctively placed their hands on areas of their body when experiencing stomachaches, headaches, and injuries, not as a conscious but a reflexive reaction to pain and distress. Although certain people may naturally possess more ability than others, anyone can easily learn how to use the universal life energy for healing by just taking a one-day Reiki class. It’s actually part of our birthright as human beings!
Reiki means universal life energy, the primal life energy of the universe that surrounds and interpenetrates all of creation and is responsible for the health and well-being of all living things. The top character of the Reiki symbol “Rei” represents the highest spiritual intelligence of the universe. This is the higher intelligence that tells our heart when to beat, our other organs how to function optimally, our skin cells to rejuvenate after a cut, and guides a forest to heal and recover itself after a devastating forest fire. The bottom character, “ki” represents the primal life energy of the universe. Therefore a good definition of Reiki and what distinguishes it from other energy, is that, Reiki is the primal life energy of the universe guided by the highest spiritual intelligence and wisdom of the universe.
Since Reiki is guided by the highest spiritual intelligence of the universe, it has an innate wisdom that knows the root cause of every physical, mental and emotional illness and knows how to heal them. Reiki is free of any negativity and it promotes love, health, peacefulness, compassion and every beneficial life-supporting quality. Reiki is also gentle and completely safe and cannot cause harm. It can only be used for the highest good as it restores all it touches on the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels to optimal functioning, making us whole and complete.
Universal life energy also manifests in many different ways. Humans, animals, plants, water, earth, sunlight, food, etc. all have their own type of ki. There are also different types of ki responsible for the expression of the various characteristics and qualities of our human physical bodies, thoughts, feelings and states of consciousness.
Reiki, the healing method (Reiki Ho), was originally developed in Kyoto, Japan between 1922 and 1926 by Mikao Usui after he experience satori or enlightenment while meditating and fasting on the holy mountain, Mount Kurama in 1922. Since then Reiki has spread throughout the world and is now recognized as a superior healing technique.
Reiki can be learned by anyone — no special skills are needed. Reiki is learned from a Reiki Shihan (Master Teacher) whom, in addition to instruction and class practice in how to use Reiki, uses a series of attunements to help activate the student’s healing ability. The attunements amplify and fine tune the students energy field and sensitizes their hands to the higher dimension energy frequencies for healing. They also help the student become a clear channel for the healing energy to flow freely through them and connect their higher self to the Source of Reiki and it’s infinite wisdom.
Reiki balances, energizes and revitalizes all systems of the mind-body-spirit. It relieves pain and stress, promotes relaxation, helps release limiting beliefs and unwanted emotional patterns, and supports the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Reiki is not only a powerful method for healing oneself and others, it is also a wonderful tool for personal growth and spiritual self-realization. In essence, Reiki is a complete system of healthy living that empowers individuals to realize their true potential as human beings.
Reiki is offered with hands on or close to the body. It can be used anywhere, anytime especially on yourself, from in a meeting at work, on an airplane flight, or even at bedtime to promote deep, restful sleep. Since everything, based on quantum physics is energy, Reiki can benefit people, animals, plants, situations and inanimate objects. It can safely be used for any type of illness, condition or situation. Reiki also complements and enhances all other forms of healing, including traditional healthcare and medical practices, plus it bridges all beliefs, cultures and enhances all religious practices.
Note: Reiki is not a substitute for traditional diagnosis or medical care. It’s important for a person experiencing symptoms of illness to seek the advice of a qualified health care practitioner.
